Annabelle
Annabelle (2014) is a supernatural horror film directed by John R. Leonetti and is part of The Conjuring universe. The film serves as a prequel to The Conjuring (2013) and focuses on the backstory of the sinister doll, Annabelle, which was first introduced in The Conjuring.
Set in the 1960s, the film follows a young couple, John (played by Ward Horton) and Mia Form (played by Annabelle Wallis), who are expecting their first child. Their lives take a terrifying turn when they are attacked by a group of violent cultists, one of whom is possessed and attempts to murder them. During this attack, the possessed cultist uses a mysterious, old porcelain doll named Annabelle, which Mia had been collecting, to summon a demonic entity.
Soon after, the doll begins to exhibit strange and malevolent behavior, and the Form family experiences a series of terrifying and violent supernatural events. As the haunting intensifies, Mia and John seek to protect their unborn child from the evil force connected to the doll.
Annabelle builds tension through its eerie atmosphere and chilling moments, offering a blend of jump scares, suspense, and psychological horror. While it primarily focuses on the demonic possession of the doll, the film also explores themes of fear, motherhood, and the lengths a family will go to protect one another.
Though the film received mixed critical reviews, it was a commercial success and led to the development of a larger Annabelle franchise, including sequels like Annabelle: Creation and Annabelle Comes Home. The doll's eerie, unsettling presence became a central figure in horror cinema, continuing to be a symbol of supernatural dread in popular culture.
