2.0
2.0 (2018) is a science fiction action film directed by S. Shankar, and it serves as the spiritual successor to the 2010 film Enthiran (Robot). It stars Rajinikanth reprising his role as Dr. Vaseegaran and the iconic robot, Chitti, along with Akshay Kumar as the antagonist, Dr. Richard, and Amy Jackson as Nila.
The film is set in a world where the proliferation of mobile phones leads to an unexpected and disastrous consequence: birds, which are harmed by radiation emitted from mobile towers, start dying in large numbers. This chaos is orchestrated by Dr. Richard, a vengeful scientist who transforms into a powerful villain named Pakshirajan after being exposed to the electromagnetic fields of mobile phone towers. Pakshirajan’s goal is to eliminate all mobile phones to stop the destruction of birds and nature, as he believes the increasing number of phones is causing a global environmental crisis.
In response to this threat, Dr. Vaseegaran reactivates his previous creation, Chitti, the humanoid robot, to battle Pakshirajan and his destructive forces. However, Chitti’s own evolution brings forth new challenges as he faces off against the dangerous and powerful villain.
2.0 explores themes of technological advancement, environmental conservation, and the consequences of excessive reliance on mobile technology. The film is a visual spectacle, with groundbreaking special effects and action sequences, including the use of CGI and VFX to bring the robotic characters and larger-than-life sequences to life.
The film also carries a social message about the dangers of unchecked technological growth and the need to strike a balance between progress and nature. 2.0 became a major box office success and was praised for its ambitious visual effects, Rajinikanth's performance, and Akshay Kumar's role as the antagonist. It is considered one of the most expensive Indian films ever made and a landmark in Indian science fiction cinema.
